Background of the Study:
Faith-based organizations (FBOs) are influential in shaping community perceptions and attitudes toward mental health in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government, Edo State. These organizations often provide spiritual counseling, support groups, and holistic healing practices that align with the cultural and religious beliefs of the community (Egharevba, 2023). FBOs can play a pivotal role in reducing stigma associated with mental illness and encouraging individuals to seek help. However, the reliance on spiritual interventions may sometimes delay access to professional psychiatric care, creating a complex interplay between faith and medicine (Omoregie, 2024). Recent studies suggest that collaborative approaches between FBOs and mental health professionals can enhance treatment outcomes while respecting cultural values (Adeniyi, 2025). This study seeks to appraise the role of FBOs in influencing mental health attitudes and treatment practices.

Statement of the Problem:
In Ikpoba-Okha, while FBOs offer substantial support for individuals with mental health challenges, their influence may inadvertently lead to a delay in seeking professional psychiatric care. The predominant focus on spiritual healing may overshadow evidence-based interventions, contributing to prolonged suffering and unmet mental health needs. This study aims to address these challenges by evaluating the dual impact of FBOs on mental health treatment (Egharevba, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the role of FBOs in shaping mental health attitudes.
  2. To evaluate the impact of FBO-led interventions on mental health outcomes.
  3. To recommend strategies for integrating spiritual support with professional mental health care.

Research Questions:

  1. How do FBOs influence community attitudes toward mental health?
  2. What impact do FBO interventions have on treatment-seeking behaviors?
  3. How can FBOs and mental health professionals collaborate effectively?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. FBOs significantly shape positive mental health attitudes.
  2. Spiritual interventions by FBOs delay professional mental health treatment.
  3. Collaborative models between FBOs and health professionals improve mental health outcomes.

Significance of the Study:
This study will elucidate the dual role of faith-based organizations in mental health, providing evidence for integrated approaches that respect cultural values while promoting professional care. Its insights may inform policy and practice in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government (Egharevba, 2023; Omoregie, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs): Religious institutions involved in community support and health.
  • Mental Health: The state of psychological and emotional well-being.
  • Attitudes: Beliefs and perceptions that influence behavior toward mental health.
